How to educate White Folks about race in the Post-Obama Era

In 2008, the liberal talking heads and political pundits gleefully claimed ‘the not so surprise’ ascent of presidential candidate and the eventual 44th president of the United States of America, Barack Obama represented a new ‘post-racial’ America. I guess, America became post-racial once a critical mass of white people was comfortable enough to vote for a black person. Excluding the fact that black people and other non-white voters ‘officially’ got voting rights in 1965, during that 50 year period, we had the choice of the old white guy on the left or on the right until the 2008 election. Now that we have a new president and a new era, how do black people talk honestly about race and racism in America?

Well, here’s a step-by-step guide for black folks (Latinx, Asians, and Native Americans do whatever you like) on how to educate white people about race in the post-Obama era.

Step 1: How to talk about race and educate white people (white friends, lovers, co-workers, random racist Twitter troll,s, etc.)

Answer: DON’T!

It’s been a 400-year conversation, and we’re all still talking about race and racism. Not to mention black folks are still being murdered because of their skin color. #BlackLivesMatter. Fredrick Douglass, Ida B. Wells, Sojourner Truth, Malcolm X, MLK, Cornell West, Angela Davis, and countless others all fought for America to honestly address its racist history.  To become the society based on freedom, justice, and equality. Instead, in November 2016, 62 million fellow Americans made a man who said this, the President of United States.

“When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”

Trump, tell us how you really feel. Just imagine his opinions about ‘the blacks”.

Until our newest leader and his party of angry white folks descend the United States into a Mad Max-esque dystopia, we’re still on top as the world’s sole military and economic superpower…which means folks all over the world should have basic knowledge of U.S. history…which undoubtedly means that our fellow white citizens who live in the same country as black people should know their country’s own history. There is no excuse for ignorance, and anyone claiming ignorance of this history is lying.

It also means that it should not be black people’s job to educate grown white folks about race. They’re grown and, barring being mentally handicapped, they can read at least at a fourth-grade level. There are books, documentaries, Google, or the strange building in your neighborhood–a “library”–where creepy old dudes watch porn at 3 pm on Wednesdays on public computers.

Well, not having to educate white folks about race should free up a lot of our time. What should black folks do with all that free time not educating white folks about race and racism? Drink tea, talk shit about LeBron, play the dozens, or check out that new Jidenna album because it’s dope.
